慈宗名义由太虚大师所立，大师提倡人生佛教，于晚年集大成而出《慈宗三要》,重视瑜伽次第修证，涵容三乘，不舍一法，导归兜率。1924年2月5日，太虚编《慈宗三要》，确然有立。1932年12月25日,太虚建立厦门慈宗学会。禅师继承太虚遗志，确立和发展慈宗，以此融贯三乘。相传布袋和尚、傅翕大士即是弥勒化身。
